Military Firearm Training Credit for LTC

Online Course $49: Your First Step Toward LTC

Texas makes it easier for active-duty military and honorably discharged veterans to get their License to Carry (LTC) by recognizing prior firearm training.

What Qualifies:

If you’re active duty or a veteran, you can use military firearm training or range scores from the past 10 years to satisfy the shooting proficiency requirement for the LTC.It doesn’t have to be handgun-specific—rifle training counts too.

  • Rifle or handgun qualification scores
  • Firearms familiarization training records
  • Any official documentation showing range qualification or weapons proficiency

What You’ll Need to Submit to claim this exemption:

  • A completed LTC-104 certificate from an approved online or in-person course (covers classroom portion)
  • Proof of military firearm training within the last 10 years (e.g., range card, training record, DD-214 with qualification noted)
  • Supporting documents like:
  • Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES)
  • Orders or letter from commanding officer
  • DD-214 showing honorable or general discharge (if within 365 days of separation)

Texas DPS LTC Fee Discounts

  • Active duty: $0 state license fee
  • Veterans: $25 state license fee

Why It Matters: This exemption saves time, money, and hassle—especially for those who’ve already proven proficiency in service. You still need to complete the classroom portion, but you can skip the range test if your documentation qualifies.
