Online OC (Pepper Spray) Certification – Part 1

Houston, Fort Bend County, and statewide Texas.

Texas Penal Code §46.05 treats a duty-size chemical dispensing device as a prohibited weapon. The statute supplies a defense to prosecution when the officer has completed currently approved training. This online course is that training.

It is open only to officers who have already finished Level III. Level II alone does not qualify. Certificates issued under older, superseded curricula no longer satisfy the defense. Live exposure is not part of this course and is not required.

Curriculum (current Private Security Board standard):

• Curriculum (current Private Security Board standard): The modules address
• Composition and behavior of oleoresin capsicum versus earlier agents
• Physiological and psychological effects, including why post-deployment monitoring is required
• Practical deployment limits: minimum distance, effective range, targeting, burst duration, and verbalization
• Immediate decontamination steps and recognition of medical emergencies
• Common liability failures (excessive use, missing documentation, delayed aftercare)

Upon passing the exam you receive the online classroom certificate. A brief in-person practical is still required to finish full certification and is booked separately.

Intended users: Commissioned security officers working or seeking posts in the Greater Houston area (including Fort Bend County) and elsewhere in Texas who need current OC training documented so they may carry a duty-size device. This certificate does not authorize firearms carry and does not replace Level III.

Cost and access: $40 for online portion only. One payment. Immediate access after enrollment. No range or classroom attendance for Part 1.
