Texas constitutional carry allows eligible individuals to carry without an LTC in Texas. However, this protection does not extend across state lines. A Texas LTC provides reciprocity in 39 states (some with restrictions), making it invaluable for interstate travel. The standard LTC fee is $40, plus class costs.

Your responsibility: Verify current reciprocity status through the Texas DPS website before traveling (State Reciprocity Information | Department of Public Safety).

Reciprocity on a road trip:

  • San Antonio to Orlando: Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida currently recognize Texas LTCs. The entire route provides reciprocal legal status for LTC holders. Constitutional carry offers no legal protection outside Texas.
  • Austin to Boise: Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho currently recognize Texas LTCs. All five states on primary routes between Texas and Idaho provide reciprocal legal status. No constitutional carry protection exists beyond Texas borders.
  • Beaumont to Phoenix: New Mexico and Arizona recognize Texas LTCs. The entire southwestern route provides reciprocal legal status for LTC holders. Constitutional carry ends at the Texas state line.

Bottom Line: Constitutional carry provides no legal framework outside Texas. A Texas LTC provides the only recognized legal basis for interstate firearm carry.
