The fastest way to make the Texas LTC proficiency exam harder than it needs to be is bringing the wrong gun.
Micro-compacts conceal. That is the point. They also recoil harder, run a shorter sight radius, and punish sloppy trigger work across 50 timed rounds. That combination can turn a straightforward qualification into an unnecessary fight.
What Works Better:
A mid-size 9mm or a smooth-shooting .38 Special revolver gives you more control, a longer sight radius, and less muzzle flip. You still meet every legal requirement for the test. You simply remove artificial difficulty.
The test is not a competition for the tightest group or a perfect score. It is not a gear contest. The goal is to demonstrate safe, accurate fire under the official course of fire. Qualify cleanly. Choose the tool that lets you do that.
Practical Advice
If your everyday carry is a micro-compact, that is the gun you should ultimately master. Train with it. Carry it. Build the skills with it.
The proficiency demonstration is different. It is a pass/fail gate, not a training session. Practice with the gun you will shoot on test day so the trigger, sights, and recoil are not a surprise. That part does not change. If the micro is still producing excess muzzle flip or inconsistent groups under the timed course of fire, bring a more controllable mid-size for the official qualification. Pass cleanly, then go straight back to training with your actual carry gun.
